Autosuggestion Lyrics

[Intro]
Here, here
Everything is by design
Everything is by design

[Verse]
Here, here
Everything is kept inside
So take a chance and step outside
Your hopes, your dreams, your paradise
Heroes, idols, cracked like ice
Here, here
Everything is kept inside
So take a chance and step outside
Pure frustration face to face
A point of view creates more waves
So take a chance and step outside
Take a chance and step outside
Lose some sleep and say you tried
Meet frustration face to face
A point of view creates more waves

[Outro]
So lose some sleep and say you tried
So lose some sleep and say you tried

Genius Annotation

Joy Division’s “Autosuggestion” seems to be related to actual autosuggestion, which is a psychological technique related to the Placebo effect.

Autosuggestion is the act of someone repeating a verbal phrase so that an idea may remain within his/her mind subconsciously. This is sometimes done during therapy so that person may change his/her behavior.

Interestingly, autosuggestion is usually used by those who feel powerless in their own lives and/or suffer from mental illnesses such a depression or anxiety.

Something to note is that Ian Curtis is considered by many to have suffered from mental illnesses as he took his own life by means of hanging on May 18, 1980. However, it wasn’t documented whether or not Ian engaged in auto suggestive therapy.
