On release day, Valerie Broussard and Lena Leon who both wrote the song with Kygo held an Instagram Live celebrating the release. Valerie shared the following about the writing process:

So we ended up writing a love song called “The Truth” and we [Lena and Valerie] sent it over to Kygo and he really liked it. We woke up the next morning to a couple of emails and one said “Hey, you know, if you change like just a couple of words in this, it becomes a breakup song” and he [Kygo] was like “I actually think the song is stronger this way”. I think a lot of people don’t know that not only is he [Kygo] a great producer but he is a really strong songwriter and it was really fun to go back and worth especially with the vocal chops which were a team effort.

The song was originally teased in an Instagram post by Kygo on May 1st which lead it to be labelled by fans as ‘Baby Kygo ID’ because of the ‘baby face’ filter used by Kygo in the teaser. The song was officially announced as part of Golden Hour when the tracklist was released on May 15th before Kygo surprisingly decided to release The Truth as a single 1 week before the release of the full album.
