This Woman’s Work [Director’s Cut] Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Pray God you can cope
I stand outside this woman's work, this woman's world
Oh, it's hard on the man now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the father

[Chorus 1]
I should be crying, but I just can't let it show
Should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things I should have done that I never did
All the things I should have said that I never said
Make it go away

[Verse 2]
Give me these moments back
Give them back to me
Give me that little kiss
Give me your hand

[Interlude]
Gimme...
Gimme...
Gimme...

[Chorus 2]
I should be crying, but I just can't let it show
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things I should have said that I never said
All the things I should have done that I never did
The things that you wanted for me
The things that you wanted from me
All the love I should have given, but I didn't
All the things we should have done that we never did
All the things we should have given, but we didn't
Make it go away
Just make it go away

About

Genius Annotation

Perhaps the most controversial release from Kate Bush, “This Woman’s Work” is a song featured in the film She’s Having a Baby and released as a single in 1989 to support The Sensual World. Kate’s first album in 2011, Director’s Cut, features an entirely rerecorded version of the song.

Although it does have the largest drop in key, a heafty two whole tones from Ab to E major, this fact is practically forgotten as the listener absorbs the new world this version creates. Almost doubling in length to over 6 minutes, possibly her most beloved and universally accessible ballad had been transformed into a more ambient and reverb-heavy equivalent. Obviously neither replacing nor competing with the original, the new version, despite its heavy criticism, has earned the titles of “moving”, “unsettling” and “quietly spectacular”.
