Genius Annotation

A week after debuting her new single “CRZY" Kehlani re-ups with “Distraction.” Produced by Pop & Oak and Some Randoms, the R&B track finds Kehlani looking for a casual relationship with someone who can give their time, but “not wanna be mine.”

A snippet of the song was first released by Kehlani’s friend and DJ: Noodz, while she was on tour.

The breezy R&B song finds Kehlani looking for someone romantic to draw her attention away from real life.

This song is about a girl. I was in Philly making all these songs for the album with Pop & Oak, these dope producers. I was talking to this girl and I was like, it’s cool to have a little thing but right now I’m so in my vibe. So you got to be a distraction but you really can’t take away from what I got going on. I made it an Instagram caption first and then was like, “that was shit was fire,” and took off the caption—we made this song right after.

A lot of my songs are about women. Sometimes I don’t say “he” or “she”—I’m just talking. I don’t feel like I have to necessarily go over the top and make sure that I have to stuff it down people’s throats—that I like women and men.

In the context that I’m saying, it’s something fun and not serious, but not to where you don’t care about it. You’re like, “this is tight, you’re tigth, you’re super cool.” It’s like the homie but someone who respects what you got going on but still wants to make you feel good and stuff.

They played me the beat first and I was like, “Wooo this is so tight.” We usually just hook up the little mic in the main room and just freestyle, or I’ll just write for a second and then give like a rough take. Once I sang the intro they put that on the front of the song and I was like “Woah! This is going to smack people in the face everytime the song comes on.” The first thing they hear is that super 90s oh. Lots of harmonies

Oak is a super fire vocal producer—as someone who grew up in a choir, I love that. I love ,“Yo, do this and do this,” and I’m hearing this, “Just do this and do this.” He of pushes me to explore the vocal production realm too and now I‘m really into it because of him.
