Genius Annotation

“nobody likes a secret” is the 12th song on Lizzy McAlpine’s second album, five seconds flat. It was released alongside the album on April 8th, 2022. It’s one of Lizzy’s most personal songs to date.

Lyrically, the song talks about a past relationship that ended, and how the other person seems almost ashamed of said relationship. “No explanation, just a quote in a magazine/Where you said you only dated me for fun”, and “But the gist of it was how you never loved me/Only in it for the sex” are two examples of how the other person views the relationship. In the song, Lizzy tells the listener that, despite what this other person has said, there’s more to it. The song is a reflection on the relationship, and how, even after everything is over, she still seems to be the other’s personal secret that nobody likes.

Sonically, the song is very stripped back and acoustic, consisting of very minimal and mellow instrumentation accompanied by the singer’s soulful and emotional vocal delivery.

Genius Answer

I’ve never really been nervous to release a song, but for this one, I almost am; I know he’s going to hear it and know that it’s about him because all the lyrics are extremely real. I’m a little scared, but I’m speaking my truth.
