How Low Can You Go Lyrics
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
[Verse 1]
The last time I saw you
We did coke in a closet
At the Chateau Marmont
We were happy and on it
There were too many people
There was fun, there was evil
And we both took the ride
[Pre-Chorus]
It was colder than fuck
For a night in LA
And I couldn't stop thinkin'
If I was okay
You were makin' me laugh
She was makin' me sway
And I thought I could fly
[Chorus]
How low can you go?
'Cause I wanna know
How low can you go?
How low can you go?
'Cause I wanna know
How low can you go?
(Oh)
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
[Verse 2]
I heard that you stopped
Have some kids and a guy
I was happy and sad
But I didn't know why
I still think of you now
While I'm touchin' the sky
It's been a long, long time
[Bridge]
And so much happens in between
The tears catch fire like gasoline
Just tell me, what's the worst you've seen?
I wanna know
[Chorus]
How low can you go?
'Cause I wanna know
How low can you go?
How low can you go?
'Cause I wanna know
How low can you go?
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
How low can you, can you go?
How low can you, can you go?
How low can you, can you go?
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
About
LP’s “How Low Can You Go” expresses themes of connection and vulnerability between two people in a poetic fashion, very similar to other songs included on the album Churches.
For instance, during an interview with Songfacts, LP delved further into this concept, thoroughly expressing some of the thematic ideas relayed in this song:
I’m always obsessed with this. It’s a bunch of stories about me moving from New York to Hollywood and always wondering if I’m getting out of control. I’m always like that. I always think about where your life can go if you let it… if you’re not careful. Or, if you are careful.
[…]
[It’s a representation of] an amalgam of many wild nights I’ve had in NYC and LA. Sometimes they stick with you. You have feelings for these characters and situations in all their flawed and beautiful madness.
Moreover, in terms of melody, LP wrote this song with their long-time collaborators, Mike Del Rio and Nate Campany; after combining a guitar track Del Rio had written years earlier, LP steered the melody into something that felt “sexy” with a “slinky beat”.

It’s just like a poem, where you take poetic licenses, [and] in this case [they are about] a series of dialogues […] I’ve had with people or women. You’re in a relationship with someone, but you meet somebody else and you get this type of connection with them. You ask yourself what they might be doing now, how they’re doing it and where they find themselves in life.
