Genius Annotation

Sad Clown is the 10th track on Panic! At The Disco’s final studio album, “Viva las Vengeance.”

An accompanying video was a surprise release on August 19th, the album’s release date, featuring intense choreography and Victorian costumes.

The song’s chorus interpolates Disney’s Frozen 2 song, “Into the Unknown,” written by Kristen and Robert Lopez. Panic! has also famously covered “Into the Unknown,” and their cover is considered to be a big milestone in Urie’s career.
Fans have also speculated that the bridge of the song was heavily inspired by the Kinky Boots number “Just Be” written by Cyndi Lauper. Brendon Urie had a stint on Broadway in August 2017, where he played Charlie Price in Kinky Boots. Doing Broadway is also considered to be one of Urie’s biggest milestones and would fit very well alongside the Disney influence in this song.

The biggest influence for Sad Clown, is without a doubt, Pagliacci, an Italian opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo, famously performed by Luciano Pavarotti.
On 9-3-22 Brendon described songs from VLV in a series of pop-up ADs on Pandora. For this track he stated, “…Sad Clown is a throw-out to Mr. Pavarotti, Luciano Pavarotti…”
