Looking Up Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Things are looking up, oh, finally
I thought I'd never see the day when you'd smile at me

We always pull through, oh, when we try
I'm always wrong, but you're never right
Oh, you're never right

[Chorus]
Honestly, can you believe
We cross the world while it's asleep?

I'll never trade it in
'Cause I've always wanted this and
It's not a dream anymore
No
It's not a dream anymore
It's worth fighting for

[Verse 2]
Could've given up so easily
I was a few cheap shots away from the end of me

Taking for granted 'most everything
That I would've died for just yesterday
Just yesterday

[Chorus]
Honestly, can you believe
We cross the world while it's asleep?

I'll never trade it in
'Cause I've always wanted this and
It's not a dream anymore
No
It's not a dream anymore
It's worth fighting for

About

Genius Annotation

“Looking Up” is an upbeat and hopeful track, lyrically about how the band feels like it has become an overnight success. This album was released in 2009, only 5 years after their first record All We Know Is Falling. It wasn’t until Misery Business and Riot! that the band really got the ball rolling however in 2007. The album debuted at number 2 on Billboard 200 selling 175,000 copies in its first week, even becoming their second biggest album on that chart, only behind their self-titled album which debuted at number one in 2013.

At the time of release, Brand New Eyes was Paramore’s greatest success and that rings true throughout this song, almost prophetically.

Genius Answer

Taylor and I kept bugging Josh to write a feel-good, fast-paced song. You know the kind of song that makes you roll your windows down and sing really loud even in dead-stop traffic (for those of you in L.A.)? I drove over to Josh’s one day. It was starting to get warmer outside and the sky was so clear. I didn’t get out much during this time, so it was an exceptionally good day for me. When I got there, he handed me a demo and I took off with it. While I was driving away, the sun was in my rearview mirror. I rolled my windows down. Then I realized we had that song! All the lyrics are pretty self explanatory. By the end of the writing process for brand new eyes, we were in such a different place than we’d started. I felt lucky that we’d made it through our differences and the last year. And I thought how dumb we would’ve been to give up on everything we built. This is my favourite song on the record because it’s the most honest that I could’ve been about how proud I am of Paramore.
