Something Happened on the Way to Heaven Lyrics

[Verse 1]
We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry? (How many times?)
Yes, I'm sorry

[Verse 2]
How can something so good go so bad? (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
How can something so right go so wrong? (Ooh-ooh)
I don't know, I don't have all the answers (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry? (How many times?)

[Chorus]
Well, you know, you can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving, 'less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me, ah, yeah

[Verse 3]
I only wanted someone to love (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
But something happened on the way to heaven (Ooh-ooh)
It got a hold of me and wouldn't let go (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry? (How many times?)
Ooh, yes, I'm sorry, (Sorry)
[Chorus]
Well, you know You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving, 'less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe me
You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving till it's all over
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, let me show you

[Bridge]
They say you can't take it with you when you go
And I believe it
But taking what I've got or being here with you
You know, I, I'd rather leave it

[Verse 1]
We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry? (How many times?)
Ooh, yes, I'm sorry (Yes, I'm sorry)

[Chorus]
Well, you know, you can run, and you can hide (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
But I'm not leaving 'less you come with me (Ooh-ooh)
We've had our problems but I'm on your side (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
You're all I need, please believe me
You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving till it's all over
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me

Genius Annotation

This is the fourth track on the album …But Seriously, released as a single on the 16th of April 1990. The song is about a person Phil loves deeply but who has abandoned him due to his behavior. Phil expresses his regrets acting this way and wishes the person comes back, explaining to him/her his self-awareness of his faults during the whole song.

The only time the title of the song is used is the second line of the third verse. The song is often identified by the recurring hook of “How many times can I say ‘I’m sorry’?”
