Cellophane Lyrics

[Chorus]
Didn't I do it for you?
Why don't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me
When all I do is for you?

[Refrain]
They wanna see us, wanna see us alone
They wanna see us, wanna see us apart
They wanna see us, wanna see us alone
They wanna see us, wanna see us apart

[Verse]
And I just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try, but I get overwhelmed
When you're gone, I have no one to tell
And I just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try, but I get overwhelmed
All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had

[Chorus]
And didn't I do it for you?
Why don't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me
When all I do is for you?
And didn't I do it for you?
Why won't I do it for you?
Why won't you do it for me
When all I do is for you?
[Reprise]
But I just want to feel you're there
And I don't want to have to share our love
I try, but I get overwhelmed
When you're gone, I have no one to tell

[Outro]
They're waiting
They're watching
They're watching us
They're hating
They're waiting
And hoping
I'm not enough

Genius Annotation

Cellophane is a Non-Album single from Pom Pom Squad and a cover song originally written and performed by FKA Twigs This cover version released in 2020, a year after the original version was released, and in between Pom Pom Squads Ow EP and their debut album Death of a Cheerleader

Front person, Mia Berrin, describes the original FKA Twigs version of Cellophane as “her favorite song of 2019” which no doubt inspired the cover song. In an interview with Stereogum she also said this about the influence FKA Twigs has had on Pom Pom Squads music:

I’ve been a fan of twigs since I was in high school and heard ‘Hide’ off of EP1. She was one of the first artists that made me seen as a woman of color occupying an alternative space, and I could immediately hear myself in the sweeping ebbs and flows of [Cellophane]"

The band recorded this song on the same day they recorded their follow up single Red With Love

This version takes a more softer approach than the original. And another thing that distinguishes it from the original is the instrumental being a slow and somber guitar riff alongside side heavy full force strikes of an acoustic drum kit. Mia shows off her vocal range the most on this song than any other song she has recorded. Going from soft, low, and whispery performance then shifting her voice up to nearly a Soprano A5 pitch which is an uncommonly high pitch.

In a track by track breakdown with Consequence , while elaborating on the song Red With Love, Mia references this cover song. She says:

I recorded our cover of “Cellophane” shortly before I found out that I needed to get a corrective surgery for a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates that prevented me from breathing through my nose. When I try to describe this to people they’re like, “So…a rhinoplasty?”, But that isn’t the case, as I was born with my mother’s perfect nose.
Either way, I can’t listen to [Red With Love/Cellophane] since all I hear is myself screlting for my life."
