Genius Annotation

Please refer to the bio for the studio version of this instrumental which was subsequently recorded for 1975’s A Night at the Opera.

The history surrounding this piece, is, of course, rooted in Great Britain, which begs the question of its title and lyrics if, for instance, the ruling monarch was a king. An article in “History Today” provides some insight, e.g., the following lyrics are the first set the site cites,

God bless our Noble King,

God Save great George our King …

And in case the instrumental sounds familiar, particularly if you happen to be an American, here’s a reminder of the piece to which Americans (as in North Americans, south of Canada, and North of Mexico, which is a country in North America, north of Central America; the historic geographic borders are well beyond the scope of this writ, but it appears that Mexicans and Canadians are American, too? Comments and fact-checkers are invited to enlighten whether or not this is a “thing”, and, in fact, whether of not Mexico is considered part of North America or Central America) refer a “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, lyrics by Samuel Francis Smith,

My country, ‘tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
