Don’t Cry Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You've been on and on again
And this time, I'm not listening
It's been minutes since we've spoken last
Already talking to my friends
You can't admit it that you lied, lied, how you lied
Yeah, I've been absent, but I've tried, tried, I have tried
But boys don't cry

[Verse 2]
You've been writing novels
I'm the inbox to your problems every weekday
We don't talk much in real life
We fake fight and that's all we do, do
But if it's over, then it's over
Doesn't have to be a TV drama
If it's over, then it's over

[Verse 3]
You've been off and on again
I've always been your therapist
And you can't say anymore, oh yeah
You've lost the right to be my friend
I know you're drinking every night, night, night, night
Yeah, I've been absent, but I've tried, tried, I have tried, oh
[Chorus]
But if it's over, then it's over
Doesn't have to be a teenage drama
If it's over, then it's over
If it's over, then it's over
Doesn't have to be a TV drama
If it's over, then it's over
But boys don't cry
No, boys don't

[Outro]
If it's over, then it's over
You don't have to go and make this harder
If it's over, then it's over

About

Genius Annotation

“Don’t Cry” is the first track on Australian singer Ruel’s sophomore EP, FREE TIME. Ruel first teased the track during his takeover at the New York City YouTube headquarters on August 22, 2019, when he said that this is his favorite track on the EP. In the song, he details having to put his own emotions aside to support those of a friend.

The track also tackles gender constructs and the harmful mentality that boys should not and do not cry. The title of the track is reminiscent to a title used by one of Ruel’s inspirations, Frank Ocean. Ocean released a magazine called “Boys Don’t Cry” in 2016.

What did Ruel say about "Don’t Cry"?
Genius Answer

During an exclusive concert at the New York City YouTube headquarters on August 22, 2019, Ruel announced the track’s existence by explaining that his favorite track from his upcoming sophomore EP is “Don’t Cry”.

In an interview with The Music Australia, Ruel explained that

Probably the most personal song on it is either Hard Sometimes or [the opener] Don’t Cry. Those are by far the most real songs – and all the stories that I tell in those songs are coming straight from me and all my life experiences.

In a November 2019 interview with The Face, Ruel explained

“Every lyric that you hear [in Don’t Cry] is either exaggerated or did happen,” he says. “I had a relationship with this girl that I broke up with because of many reasons, and I really felt like I had a pretty strong argument, and she just wouldn’t accept it. So for weeks afterwards, I was getting insanely long texts saying why I was making a mistake. It got frustrating because even though I broke up with this girl, it never really felt like I did. Obviously, it’s way better now. This was like a year and a half ago and we’re all good friends now. But yeah, it was about that time.”
