Younger Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You and I, used to walk the streets at night
Our parents didn't know, we kept the TV goin'
And left on all the bedroom lights
And no, I haven't seen you since we lost all our innocence
You left me in the dark while you drink in the park
I'll never be the same again

[Pre-Chorus]
You and me were so, so close
And maybe that's what hurts the most
It's out of my hands, I've done what I can
So I just save my breath

[Chorus]
Deep in my heart, I know that it's over
Deleted your number, so I can't call you
Call you my brother, the way that we used to
When we were younger, younger

[Verse 2]
I saw you just the other night
I didn't even recognize you
I find it kind of strange, I guess that people change
But I didn't expect you to
[Pre-Chorus]
You and me were so, so close
And maybe that's what hurts the most
It's out of my hands, I've done what I can
So I just save my breath

[Chorus]
Deep in my heart, I know that it's over
Deleted your number, so I can't call you
Call you my brother, the way that we used to
When we were younger, younger

[Bridge]
Tryna get in touch with you, I don't know where you've been
Have a conversation but you'll never let me in
I've tried, I've tried
I've tried with you a thousand times
Maybe I don't have to play the bad guy in the end
'Cause I've been trying hard enough to be a better friend
I've tried, I've tried
But we're out of time

[Chorus]
Deep in my heart, I know that it's over
Deleted your number so, I can't call you
My brother, the way that we used to
When we were younger, younger

Genius Annotation

“Younger” by Australian singer Ruel that details a childhood friendship fizzling out as two people start to grow apart. The was Ruel’s second release off of his debut EP Ready and is his first track to go platinum.

Ruel said in a Beats1 Official interview:

[This song is] a lot more personal to me. I think it’s just about parting ways with a friend and growing up differently overtime, ‘cause like I feel like that happens to everyone. They have like a best friend in like primary school or high school and then just like, you part ways overtime you, you know, have different interests and don’t really hang out with each other anymore, so I guess that’s what it’s about.

In an interview with Atwood Magazine Ruel explained that

I wrote this song with my friend Sarah Aarons pretty much exactly a year ago. We were just talking about our experiences with childhood relationships and how easily they could fall apart and how fragile they were. We both really related to that and we thought a lot of people would too. This is still very relevant to me because the more I’m away from home and my friends, the more relationships I lose.

In an interview with Coup De Main, Ruel dived into his take on childhood friendships requiring as much effort as any other relationship saying

Thank you, so much. I guess so, I feel like for certain friendships when you’re this age or my age or younger, I just feel like when you’re growing, people find different interests. You just grow apart naturally, it doesn’t have to be one particular thing that pulls it apart, but I guess it’s all about growing, instead of the strength you need to put into the relationship.
