Try Again Lyrics

[Verse]
What would you do to get to me?
What would you say to have your way?
Would you give up or try again
If I hesitate to let you win?
Would you be yourself or play your role?
Tell all the boys to keep it low?
If I say no, would you turn away?
Or play me off or would you stay?

[Chorus]
If at first you don't succeed
Dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
If at first you don't succeed
Then dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again, oh

[Rap verse]

[Chorus]
If at first you don't succeed
Dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
If at first you don't succeed
Then dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again, oh
[Hook]
See, you don't wanna throw it all away
Might be shy on the first date
What about the next date?
Oh, oh, oh, oh
See, you don't wanna throw it all away
Might be buggin' on the first date
But what about the next date?
Oh, oh, oh, oh

[Chorus]
If at first you don't succeed
Dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
If at first you don't succeed
Then dust yourself off and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
No, no, no, no

Genius Annotation

Try Again is the side B for the Spotify-exclusive “Spotify Singles”, released by Rag'n'Bone Man on May 3rd, 2017. Like the single’s side A, it was recorded at producer Jim Eno’s Public Hi-Fi Studios in Austin.

It’s a cover of the 2000 song by American singer Aalliyah, originally released as the lead single for the soundtrack to the film Romeo Must Die, and later included on international pressings of her self-titled album.

In comparison, Rag'n'Bone Man’s cover has a more minimalistic production, using mostly organic instruments and raw background vocals. Like Timbaland’s rapping on the original version, Rory himself replaces the second verse of the song in favor of a rap verse he wrote himself.

Lyrically, the song is about somebody who tries to encourage another person they’re dating to “try again” in asking them out if it didn’t work out the first time, and not give up on the relationship before it even gets a chance to start.
