The Great Beyond Lyrics
I've watched the stars fall silent from your eyes
All the sights that I have seen
I can't believe that I believed
I wished that you could see
There's a new planet in the solar system
There is nothing up my sleeve
[Refrain]
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
[Verse 2]
In all this talk of time, talk is fine
But I don't want to stay around
Why can't we pantomime
Just close our eyes and sleep sweet dreams
Me and you with wings on our feet
[Refrain]
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
I'm breaking through, I'm bending spoons
I'm keeping flowers in full bloom
I'm looking for answers from the great beyond
[Verse 3]
I want the humming birds, the dancing bears
Sweetest dreams of you
I look into the stars
I look into the moon
[Refrain]
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
[Chorus]
I'm breaking through, I'm bending spoons
I'm keeping flowers in full bloom
I'm looking for answers from the great beyond
I'm breaking through, I'm bending spoons
I'm keeping flowers in full bloom
I'm looking for answers from the great

About
“The Great Beyond” was written for the 1999 film Man on the Moon starring Jim Carrey, and was released as a single from the film’s soundtrack album. The film took its name from R.E.M.’s 1992 hit “Man on the Moon”.
“The Great Beyond” is a slightly more abstract tribute to Andy Kaufman, the surreal prankster and “song-and-dance man” famous for his Elvis impersonation, wrestling feuds, and reading The Great Gatsby to bewildered audiences.
The song itself was a minor hit in the US, peaking in 57 on the Billboard Hot 100; but was a huge hit in the UK, where it peaked at #3 on the UK Singles charts, becoming the highest charting song ever for the band.

My stab at an “Ashes To Ashes”, which I consider to be one of the greatest songs ever written. Revisit a character that you’ve written a classic song about, and try to one-up yourself. That is no easy task. Bowie pulled it off for real. I think live recordings of this song are more exciting than the studio version, but it is a stunner.
