Minor Feelings Lyrics

[Verse 1]
How am I supposed to feel
When you're telling me that nothing in my life is real?
When you throw your words and hide behind a plastic shield
I just sit and smile

[Verse 2]
Writing my own fairytales
Building forts between the sofa and the windowsill
Dreaming of the day I'm tall enough to save myself
But I was just a child

[Pre-Chorus]
What it takes to recognize
Emotions that I try to hide
The more I keep them all inside
The more they bury me alive

[Chorus]
All my life, I've felt out of place
All my life, I've been saving face
Well, all these minor feelings

Are majorly breaking me down (Breaking me down)
All my life, you took me for a fool
All my life, you told me what to do
All these minor feelings
Are majorly getting to me now

Genius Annotation

“Minor Feelings” is the opening track on Rina’s second studio album Hold the Girl, the song is titled after the book Minor Feelings by Korean-American poet Cathy Park Hong about the marginalisation of the Asian-American experience.
As Rina told in a press release:

It sets the thesis for the record – like “Dynasty” did [on SAWAYAMA].

What have the artists said about the song?
Genius Answer

The title of this song is kind of the secondary title of the record. It was inspired by a collection of essays called Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong. It’s the name she gives to this collective feeling that a lot of Asian Americans have about racial microaggressions, and I really connected with that, because for me it was a collection of all these minor feelings that has now led to a pretty major shutdown of emotions. In the music I wanted to play with the minor and the major chords, so in the chorus when I say ‘minor feelings’ it’s minor and then major when I say ‘majorly getting me down.’

What did Rina Sawayama say about "Minor Feelings"?
Genius Answer

I was so inspired by the title [of the book] itself, because a lot of racial microaggressions are minor feelings, things you don’t feel you should speak up about because it’s not a hate crime or something you think about telling the police. But the reality is, especially with Asian people, that actually did turn into a lot of hate crimes during COVID. It was horrific what was happening to elderly Asian people around the U.S. and U.K. The rhetoric around Asians and COVID was terrible. So much of what I’ve gone through can’t be separated from the sociopolitical background I exist in, which is that I’m an Asian queer woman. You can’t isolate my experience from that fact.
