Fortunate Son
Fortunate Son Lyrics
Some folks are born to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
They point the cannon at you, oh
[Chorus]
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no senator's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
[Verse 2]
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
They like to help themselves, oh
When the taxman comes to the door
Looks like a billion dollar loss, y'all
[Chorus]
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
[Verse 3]
Some folks are born with star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
But when they ask you "How much should we give?"
Well. the answer's always more, more, more, more
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate son
About
This is a cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song by the same name. The lyrics have been subtly altered by River Whyless. The original song was a protest of the Vietnam War, but this cover is a protest against the Trump presidency. The feelings of disenfranchisement now among many young people are similar to the feelings of young people during the Vietnam War that caused this song to be written, making it relevant again.

In using footage from the Women’s March on Washington (and our hometown of Asheville) for our rendition of CCR’s “Fortunate Son,” our goal is to help speak truth to power, not for the sake of perpetuating our country’s present divisiveness, but as a way to support and encourage the need for an open, honest, and compassionate conversation about our universal rights and freedoms. We’re not asking everyone to agree, but to listen to one another. We promise to do the same.
