Bells Of Rhymney Lyrics

"Oh what will you give me?"
Say the sad bells of Rhymney
"Is there hope for the future?"
Say the brown bells of Merthyr
"Who made the mine owner?"
Say the black bells of Rhondda
"And who killed the miner?"
Say the grim bells of Blaenau

"Put the vandals in court"
Say the bells of Newport
"All would be well if, if, if, if, if..."
Say the green bells of Cardiff
"Why so worried, sisters, why?"
Say the silver bells of Wye
"And what will you give me?"
Say the sad bells of Rhymney

"Oh what will you give me?"
Say the sad bells of Rhymney
"Is there hope for the future?"
Say the brown bells of Merthyr
"Who made the mine owner?"
Say the black bells of Rhondda
"And who killed the miner?"
Say the grim bells of Blaenau

Genius Annotation

While not originally billed as an Egyptians song, this track debuted the core line-up of Hitchock, Metcalfe and Windsor, sans Soft Boys bandmate Kimberley Rew. It was the first time the three had worked together in years, playing a live classic from their time together in the Soft Boys.

While the original referred to a Welsh mine disaster and the failure of a 1926 strike, the version Robyn committed to record here was in support of the ongoing strike of 1984.
