Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You) Lyrics

[Chorus]
But, very well, I believe I know you very well
Wish that you knew me, too, very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head
Very well, think that I know you very well
Wish you knew me like I know you, very well
But I think I can deal with everything going through your head
(Your filthy head)

[Bridge]
Very well, dum dum da, dum dum da
Very well, wish you knew me, too, very well
And I wish I could think of everything going through your head
Very well, dum dum da, dum da, dum da
Dum dum da, dum da, very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head

[Verse 3]
When the summer came, you were not around
Now, the summer's gone and love cannot be found
Where were you when I needed you last winter, my love?

[Verse 4]
When the winter came, you went further south
Parting from love's nest, leaving me in doubt
Where are you when I need you, like right now?
[Refrain]
Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed
But tomorrow will reflect love's past

[Verse 5]
When the winter came, you were not around
Through the bitter winds, love could not be found
Where were you when I needed you last winter, my love?
Oh, I need you, baby, I need you, baby

[Refrain]
Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed

But tomorrow will reflect love's past, oh

[Verse 6]
Spring will fill the air, you will come around
Is it summer love that will let me down?
Where were you when I needed you last winter, my love?

[Outro]
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, la la la la la
Where are you when I need you, like right now?
Right now, right now, right now
Oh
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
Where were you when I needed you last winter, my dear?
I need you, baby, I need you, baby, I need you, baby
I need you, baby, I need you, baby, I need you, baby
Oh, where were you when I needed you last winter, last winter
Yeah, need you, baby, need you, need you, baby
Oh, you want me to need you, baby
Oh, where were you when I needed you last, dear, yeah

Genius Annotation

On this two-part epic, Stevie Wonder chides his “superwoman” for leaving to Hollywood, before revealing his loneliness and abandonment in its second half. This song was about his former wife, Syreeta Wright.

Stevie wrote, produced and played all instruments on “Superwoman”, except for a guitar part by Buzzy Felten.

In 1972, the song peaked at #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #13 on Billboard’s Black Singles chart (now the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart).

What did Stevie Wonder say about "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)"?
Genius Answer

“Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)” was what we considered to be the single. But Motown didn’t think it was a single. Plus, Motown was motivated to stop Stevie from selling big. He wasn’t signed to them. He let them release the album without a contract. It was in their interest to try and suppress him. Because the higher he went up the charts, the more money he was going to demand. When we told [Motown president Ewart] Abner that “Superwoman” was the single. He said, “Oh that “Superwoman” shit. That ain’t no single.”
