After the Rain Has Fallen Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The palace guards are all sleeping
Their fires burn into the night
There's a threat of rain on the dark horizon
And all that's left is a quarter moon of light
He climbs up through the darkness
No weapon but his surprise
The greatest thief in the high Sahara
Enters the room where a sleeping princess lies
All your money, your pretty necklace
This is my work on such a night
There's a storm coming over the mountain
I'll be gone long before the morning

[Chorus]
After the rain has fallen
After the tears have washed your eyes
You find that I've taken nothing that
Love can't replace in the blink of an eye

[Verse 2]
He was gentle as the night wind
As no lover'd been before
And the rings she wore for her bridegroom
Slipped from her fingers and fell to the floor
"Take me with you, take me with you
Before my lonely life is set
I've been promised to another
To a man I've never even met"
[Chorus]
After the rain has fallen
After the tears have washed your eyes
You'll find that I've take nothing that
Love can't replace in the blink of an eye
After the thunder's spoken, and
After the lightning bolt's been hurled
After the dream is broken, there'll
Still be love in the world

[Verse 3]
She said, "Take me to another life
Take me for a pirate's wife
Take me where the wind blows
Take me where the red wine flows
Take me to the danger
Take me to the life of crime
Take me to the stars
Take me to the moon while we still have time"

[Outro]
After the rain has fallen
After the tears have washed your eyes
You'll find that I've taken nothing, that
Love can't replace in the blink of an eye
After the thunder's spoken, and
After the lightning bolt's been hurled
After the dream is broken, there'll
Still be love in the world [x2]

Sting:

I think it would be an obvious single, which is probably why it’s not gonna be the (first) single. I think it sounds like a Sting song. It’s a big sort of rousing chorus and it’s a very recognisable sound from me. It’s a fairy tale I suppose. It sounds like something from “A Thousand and One Nights” about a thief and a princess and how he takes her out of her set life, which is to be promised to someone she didn’t know. I think you can be robbed of everything in this life – your home, your money, your self-respect – yet if you only have love, if you have a relationship, then it doesn’t matter because that is really the one thing that sustains you through your whole life, and ought to. So I think love conquers all is the message I’m trying to give there. I actually believe it. I’m not just being a romantic."

I’d been trekking in India and I walked into a rajah’s palace one night, really late. It was the middle of the night. And there were all these guards sleeping with rifles on their chests, in the courtyard, and the first line of the song became, ‘The palace guards are all sleeping.’ It’s a beautiful sight – and that didn’t stop me (from) going in."

After the Rain was actually the one I spent the most time on. It’s very satisfying, too. I work with some of the best musicians in the world, and it always pleases me when they turn around and say, “I don’t know how you do that!” They’re so much better than I am – but this is my niche. It’s what I do."
