Justice Delivers Its Death
Justice Delivers Its Death Lyrics
Everyone wishes for it
How do you measure its worth?
Just by the pleasure it gives here on earth
Oh, I'm getting old
Oh, I'm getting old
Everyone wishes for youth
How have I wasted my life?
Trusting the pleasure it gives here on earth
Lord, come with fire
Lord, come with fire
Everyone's wasting their time
Storing up treasure in vain
Trusting the pleasure it gives here on earth
Oh, I see the end
Oh, I see the end
Everyone's waiting for death
How do you measure its worth?
Justice delivers its gift here on earth
Silver and gold, silver and gold
Silver and gold, silver and gold
About
The somber “Justice Delivers Its Death” is Sufjan Stevens' penultimate song on the tenth and – for now, latest – volume of his “Songs for Christmas” series. In essence, the song is the title track for Stevens' second public collection of Christmas music, Silver & Gold.
Just as “Christmas Unicorn” pulls from the post-punk classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and launches into a drastically different riff on the Joy Division song, “Justice” begins with a verse from the whimsical Burl Ives Christmas tune “Silver and Gold” – then diverts into a dour call for divine apocalyptic retribution, recalling Stevens' piano dirge “7 Swans.”
Before the album’s release, Asthmatic Kitty published a music video for the song – featuring a different audio mix and title than the final product.
