Two People Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Two people under bedsheets
One unrelenting heartbeat
One unrequited belief
Two fools in a one-horse town
Two people under bedsheets
One wallowing in defeat
One crumbling under heat
Two fools in a one-horse town
Mmm

[Verse 2]
Two people under bedsheets
One liar in the hot seat
Why cry over a deadbeat?
Two fools in a one-horse town
Two people under bedsheets
One shivering with cold feet
One suffocating lover
One fool in a wedding gown
Mmm

[Chorus]
Outside, the world is turning
A different life, you're yearning
But you just sit there, burning
Lying in his fire
And all the while, you're learning
Hope, you're yearning
You just sit there, burning
Lying in his fire
[Verse 3]
Two people under bedsheets
Two fists to play around with
One has to keep her mouth shut
Victims of a one-horse town
Two people under bedsheets
One does whatever he pleases
And one tries to speak to Jesus
But Jesus won't hear a sound
Mmm

[Chorus]
Outside, the world is turning
A different life, you're yearning
But you just sit there, burning
Lying in his fire
And all the while, you're learning
Hope you're learning
That you just sit there burning
Lying in his fire

[Outro]
Two people under bedsheets
Two children raising children
The same mistakes keep building
It's a mess of a one-horse town
It's a mess of a one-horse town
It's a mess of a one-horse town
It's a mess of a one-horse town
It's a mess of a one-horse town

About

Genius Annotation

In “Two People,” Sam Fender takes on the role of a bystanding balladeer, recalling the domestic violence he’d hear as a teen from a neighboring couple and feeling powerless to help. The man and woman in the couple are both individually characterized in the song’s verses (the ambiguous, implicit descriptions mirroring their overall anonymity to the singer), while the chorus finds Fender addressing the victim alone, hoping she’ll somehow leave her abuser for a different life instead of “burning, lying in his fire.”

“Two People” is the tenth track of Fender’s 2019 debut studio album, Hypersonic Missiles. The song touches on the often complicated situations surrounding domestic abuse, but it also deals with the isolating and cyclical nature of violence in small towns, a theme prevalent in many of Fender’s songs, including Hypersonic tracks “The Borders” and “Dead Boys”.

What did Sam Fender say about "Two People"?
Genius Answer

‘Two People’ is about domestic violence – I used to live next to a couple I could hear through the walls – I could hear an abusive relationship…It was quite frightening, especially when you’re young, and it will have an impact on you growing up.

“It’s something that you can’t do anything about – you have that thing when you’re a young kid, when I was 19 I was a string of piss. I was skinny and weak as fuck, so there was fuck all I could do about it. It was one of those things where you don’t ring the police in these towns, for that stuff. You’d end up just dragging yourself in the gutter…

“You just let things go by. It’s equally frustrating as it is sad, which easily bleeds into music. That was the only way I could see myself attempting to seek justice in it. If I can write about it, and bring awareness to it, that’s the best thing I can do, I reckon."
