Hard to Forget Lyrics

[Intro]
There stands the glass
That will ease all my pain
That will settle my brain
It's my first one today
There stands the glass
That-that will ease all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It's-it's my first one today

[Verse 1]
Ayy
I saw your sister at work
I saw your mama at church
I'm pretty sure I saw your car at the mall
I see your face in the clouds
I smell your perfume in crowds
I swear your number's all my phone wants to call

[Pre-Chorus]
It's kinda funny how I can't seem
To get away from you
It's almost like you don't want me to

[Chorus]
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey, but I got no proof
That you showed up tonight
In that dress just to mess with my head

So much for so long
Out of sight, out of mind
Girl, you're lookin' so good
It's drivin' me out of mine
Oh, you're breakin' my heart
Baby, you're playin' hard to forget
[Verse 2]
Told me to leave all your things
Out on the porch, on the swing
You'd come and grab 'em by the end of the week
Well, it's just some jeans and a shirt
But it's a whole lot of hurt
I think I know why you've been dragging your feet

[Pre-Chorus]
Ain't it funny how I can't seem
To get away from you?
It's almost like you don't want me to

[Chorus]
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey, but I got no proof
That you showed up tonight
In that dress just to mess with my head
So much for so long
Out of sight, out of mind
Girl, you're lookin' so good
It's drivin' me out of mine
Oh, you're breakin' my heart
Baby, you're playin' hard to forget

[Bridge]
There stands the glass
That-that will ease all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It's-it's my first one today
[Chorus]
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey, but I got no proof
That you showed up tonight
In that dress just to mess with my head
So much for so long
Out of sight, out of mind
Girl, you're lookin' so good
It's drivin' me out of mine
Oh, you're breakin' my heart
Baby, you're playin' hard to forget

[Outro]
Oh honey, I'm fallin' apart
And you're playin' hard to forget

About

Genius Annotation

Possibly Sam’s favorite song off his album Southside with him claiming, “it’s a really important song for the record, because the record is kind of built around that song in a way.” It‘s a sad song with a feel good, summer beat to it.

“Hard To Forget” is similar to one of Sam’s previous singles, „Break Up In A Small Town“, in which Sam cannot forget his old lover and everything around him reminds him of her.

The song samples “There Stands The Glass“ by Webb Pierce, a 1953 Country hit. Sam said that country songs from the ‘90s represent his childhood.

When I heard this Webb Pierce sample for the first time, it clicked, and I knew that was gonna be the song that was gonna be the one we sampled

He continued by adding that he wrote this song afterwards just so he could sample “There Stands The Glass.“

Luke [Laird] has just such a great taste in music. He knows his country music history, but he’s also a big fan of a lot of the stuff that I grew up listening to outside the genre. I don’t know if he had heard that Webb Pierce song [“There Stands the Glass”] somewhere, or if it just came to mind. I think he sang the Webb Pierce part and then beatboxed his drum part and took it to the studio and then worked it up. I’ve been looking for a song to sample for a while and just haven’t been able to find the right song. I’ve been messing with songs from like the ’80s and ’90s, but I think the trick was to go way back. To hear those things work together, it makes a little bit of a point. I didn’t want to hit anybody over the head with it in that way, but at the same time it does make that clear, I think.

I was writing with a buddy of mine and I was in the middle of watching this country music documentary that just came out. If y’all haven’t seen it, Ken Burns put out this country music documentary that’s really cool. It educates you on the history of country music. Country music has lots and lots of rich history. There’s a song [my friend] played for me on this track and I was like, “Man, I’ve gotta figure out how to write a song to this.” I needed a good idea. Finally found the right idea and wrote this song and we just put it out as our second single.

I’ve wanted to sample an older country song from an older era for a while, and I’ve tried a few times to make it work, and the songs just haven’t panned out or I haven’t had an idea to write with the samples that we’ve used…I tried some samples from the ‘90s ‘cause that’s kind of the era of country music that I grew up on, but it never seemed to quite work. For some reason when I heard this Webb Pierce sample for the first time, it clicked, and I knew that was gonna be the song that was gonna be the one we sampled. I was in a writing session with a buddy of mine, Luke Laird, and we were in the middle of writing a song, he played this sample for me, and within a minute of hearing it, I knew, it had to be, I didn’t even have an idea for the song. I want to be ale to tour around this song, and all I had was this Webb Pierce sample. So, that’s how it impacted me that day.
