[Verse 1]
My mother said I'm too romantic
She said, "You're dancing in the movies"
I almost started to believe her
Then I saw you and I knew
Maybe it's 'cause I got a little bit older
Maybe it's all that I've been through

I'd like to think it's how you lean on my shoulder
And how I see myself with you

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't say a word
But still, you take my breath and steal the things I know
There you go, saving me from out of the cold

[Chorus]
Fire on fire would normally kill us
But this much desire, together, we're winners
They say that we're out of control and some say we're sinners
But don't let them ruin our beautiful rhythms

'Cause when you unfold me and tell me you love me
And look in my eye
You are perfection, my only direction
It's fire on fire, mmm
It's fire on fire

[Chorus]
Fire on fire would normally kill us
But this much desire, together, we're winners
They say that we're out of control and some say we're sinners
But don't let them ruin our beautiful rhythms

'Cause when you unfold me and tell me you love me
And look in my eye
You are perfection, my only direction
It's fire on fire

[Outro]
You are perfection, my only direction
It's fire on fire

About

Genius Annotation

Sam Smith’s emotional vocals in “Fire on Fire” feature on the BBC and Netflix mini-series Watership Down, an adaptation of the eponymous 1972 Richard Adams novel, which debuted 23 December 2018. The story is an unfortunate tale of a herd of rabbits living in the town of Watership Down in England.

“Fire on Fire” follows Sam Smith’s collaboration with Calvin Harris on “Promises.” The fiery track, recorded in September 2018, perfectly mimics the beautiful-yet-ensuing chaos featured in the music video.

The song is notable for displaying Sam’s wide vocal range, reaching a lower-than-usual register.

Genius Answer

This song was written for [the 2018 BBC adaptation of] Watership Down. And I wrote it when I was very much in love. It’s probably one of the only love songs I’ve written. But it’s very dramatic. Again, I think I was trying to be Céline Dion. It was about intense passion—about two people who are fire and trying to make it work, which is a dangerous game. It was so fun to make, stepping into that musical theatre side which is always going to be in me. One day I want to be in a dress in the Royal Albert Hall singing it with a huge orchestra.
