This Christmas song was dropped on 20th November 2022 and retrospectively added to Sam Smith’s 2020 Christmas EP The Holly And The Ivy. There was no promotion and it escaped much notice, given that Sam’s hit “Unholy” was enjoying major success at the time.
Sam commented on Instagram,
This song was written by me and my beautiful and inspiring friend Simon Aldred. We wanted to make a Christmas song that felt like LOVE on Christmas Eve. I hope you can feel the warmth we felt when making it and I hope it gets you excited for the holiday season.
In an interview with Zane Lowe, early November 2022, Sam said that his creative aim was to experiment and explore different genres. This is born out by “Night Before Christmas”, which has a definte Country and Western flavour.
