Leonard Lyrics

[Verse 1]
There he goes
He finally closed the door
I turn the lock feeling more confused than before
What gives?
I thought that you would love more
Now you're a coward, sure
Then he rings
Look in his eyes
He loves you

[Chorus]
Well, well, I am bad
Well, well, hell, I am bad

[Verse 2]
He's smart
He leaves me wanting more
Knowing that I gave less
And knowing why
Time, time is what I would need
Full of myself indeed
Just walk away
Surprised
He loved you
[Chorus]
Well, well, I am bad
Well, well, hell, I am bad at loving

[Bridge]
Trust
You know that I trusted you
But I cannot let you do, to just fall in
Try
I wanted to try for you
Wanted to die for you
Dramatic things
The lies
I loved you

[Chorus]
Well, well, I am bad
Well, well, hell, I am bad at loving you

[Outro]
Surprised
Just look in my eyes

Genius Annotation

Many of The Tramp tracks find Van Etten reflecting back on a five year relationship that ended around the time of the release of her previous album, Epic. She explained to UK newspaper The Sun: “Leonard is about me looking back on a relationship and having three minds about it. Having dual feelings about loving and losing and letting the past go.”

What did Sharon Van Etten say about "Leonard"?
Genius Answer

I listened to a lot of Leonard Cohen when I wrote this song. Originally this song was called “Kevin 2”
but I didn’t want to have two songs named “Kevin” on there. But at the time, I was floating around a lot and I was naming the demos after where I was staying (Kevin’s) so I could have a timeline to kind of to refer back to the song more easily.
