Chances Are Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I was lost inside a daydream
Swimming through the saline
I looked at you and you breathed in
Well, that's the way it's always been

[Chorus]
It all comes down to creating time
You don't always have to make it right
We'll all drive by in our hybrid lives
Chances are we'll make it back

[Verse 2]
I was doing time in the L.A. jail
My crime was living inside a failure
No matter how, it don't matter now
Rest assured the rest is blurred

[Chorus]
It all comes down to doing time
We don't always have to make it a crime
We'll all drive off in our hybrid lives
Chances are we'll make it back
We'll make it back
We'll make it back
[Bridge]
Terence McKenna said:
"It is better to explore within
We were apes before we spoke of sin
The cosmos sits on the tip of a pin"

[Chorus]
It all comes down to creating time
You don't always have to make it alright
We'll all drive by with our hybrid lives
Chances are, chances are
Chances are we'll make it back
We'll make it back
We'll make it back
We'll make it back

About

Genius Annotation

“Chances Are” was first released as a B-side to the lead single, “Soak Up the Sun” from her previous album. However, was later properly released as an album track on Wildflower.

The song is inspired by the work of Terence McKenna, an ethnobotanist, philosopher, and writer, who advocated for the use of plant-based psychedelics as a means of increasing many forms of human awareness.

What did Sheryl Crow say about "Chances Are"?
Genius Answer

The concept of the song was explained by co-writer Jeff Trott:

It’s a little bit inspired by this doctor Terence McKenna, who wrote a book called Archaic Revival. He studied Psilocybin mushrooms, the effects and the religious aspects of these hallucinogenic drugs. He had this theory that human beings didn’t start talking until like a Neanderthal picked a mushroom and ate it, and then all of a sudden his brain started developing and he could speak, or he could communicate through words.

It’s really weird. It’s kind of far fetched, but I love reading stuff that’s just out there. He also called Psilocybin mushrooms the telephone to God.

“Chances Are” really was inspired by this kind of philosophy. I managed to somehow talk Sheryl into writing it with me, and it’s pretty cool. I love the music in it, too. It’s really kind of odd and not what you would typically associate Sheryl with. It’s not that weird, but for her it was a little left of center.
