Described as “theatrical” rather than confessional, “Diamond Ring” is Sheryl providing a little bit of parodical self-pity: “That song is specifically about my relationship with diamond rings. Not to embarrass myself, but I’ve been engaged more than once.” Sheryl has been engaged three times, with none of them resulting in marriage. The fact that the diamond ring represents the solidification of a relationship seems ironic to me. I seem to get the ring when it’s a last-ditch-effort kind of thing. The relationship is already starting to fall apart, so it’s like, ‘Let’s get engaged and see if that makes it better.’
