Leaving Las Vegas Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Life springs eternal
On a gaudy neon street
Not that I care at all
I spent the best part of my losing streak
In an Army Jeep
For what I can't recall
Oh, I'm bangin' on my TV set
And I check the odds
And I, and I place my bet
I pour a drink
And I pull the blinds
I wonder what I'll find

[Chorus]
I'm leaving Las Vegas
Lights so bright
Palm sweat
Blackjack on a Saturday night
Leaving Las Vegas
Leaving for good, for good
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good

[Verse 2]
Used to be I could drive up to Barstow for the night
Find some crossroad trucker to demonstrate his might
But these days it seems that, nowhere is far enough away
So I'm leaving Las Vegas today
[Chorus]
I'm leaving Las Vegas, oh
The lights so bright
Blackjack on a Saturday night
I'm leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
For good

[Verse 3]
I'm standin' in the middle of the desert
Waitin' for my ship to come in
But now no joker, no jack, no king
Can take this losing hand and, and make it win

[Chorus]
I'm leaving Las Vegas, oh
I'm leaving Las Vegas
For good
For good

[Bridge]
I quit my job as a dancer
At the Lido des Girls
And they're dealin' blackjack until one or two
Such a muddy line between the things you want
And the things you have to do, oh
[Chorus]
Leaving Las Vegas
Lights so bright
Palm sweat
Blackjack on a Saturday night
Leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Oh, I'm leaving Las Vegas
The lights so bright
Palms sweat
Blackjack on a Saturday night
I'm leaving Las Vegas
I'm leaving for good
I'm leaving for good
Oh, I'm leaving Las Vegas
Lights so bright
On a Saturday night

[Outro]
Leaving Las Vegas
And I won't be back
No, no
No, I won't be back
Not this time

Genius Annotation

“Leaving Las Vegas” was the fourth single from Sheryl Crow’s debut album and the first one to go Platinum (selling a million copies.) But what many listeners don’t know is tragic events surround the song.

Crow and her friends from the Tuesday Night Music Club, who she named the album after, wrote “Leaving Las Vegas” one night after contributor David Baerwald suggested they use the title of a novel written by his friend, John O'Brien, a struggling author at the time.

O'Brien said they could use the title of his novel as long as he was given credit, which is only reasonable. However, this seemingly minor issue would have tragic consequences about two months before the song was released as a single. Crow had performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, who later asked her if “Leaving Las Vegas” was autobiographical in any way.

Crow said the song was autobiographical but failed to acknowledge the contributions of Baerwald and especially O'Brien, who were both furious about Crow’s indiscretion. The incident seemed to so incite O'Brien, that he committed suicide on April 10, 1994, although this has never been confirmed or denied. Still, O'Brien’s suicide drove Baerwald to distance himself from Crow afterward.

A dark cloud brought on by O'Brien’s suicide hovered over the Tuesday Night Music Club for years afterward. And perhaps saddest of all is two weeks before O'Brien took his life, he learned his book was gonna be made into a movie starring Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue; the movie went on to win an Academy and a Golden Globe award.
