Calcutta Lyrics
I am caught, tangled in
Wrapped and quartered
Tripping up and over
Time lived again
For just a moment
Missing pieces find me
[Pre-Chorus]
I sweat and I ache for
Your eyes and the way you breathe
[Chorus]
And I wake, saying your name
And I wake, saying your name
[Verse 2]
You are more than warm belief
Melting skywards
More than silence broken
I'm whole again
For just a moment
Till the morning comes
[Chorus]
And I wake, saying your name
And I wake, saying your name
Oh, she said you'd better believe it
I said you don't know
Oh, you said you'd better believe it
I said you don't even know
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 3]
Time lived again for just a moment
Missing pieces find me
And I'm whole again for just a moment
Missing pieces find me
Time lived again for just a moment
(I sweat and I ache for)
Missing pieces find me
(I sweat and I ache for)
And I'm whole again, whole again
(I sweat and I ache for)
Whole again
(I sweat and)
[Instrumental Outro]
About
“Calcutta” is the first track on alternative rock band “Sleep Tokens'” second EP, “Two”.
Based off the music video released by the band; this seems to be the “birth” of Vessel. His residence on earth is being defined in this song. He is transformed into an entity that is completely reliant of the existence of these memories he sings about. Vessel is now a devoted follower to Sleep.
Calcutta (natively Kolkata), is the capital of India’s West Bengal state. Calcutta, named such after the Hindu goddess Kali, homes grand architecture, festival culture, and holds the tombsite of Mother Teresa.
Focusing on the entomology, “Kolkata”Calcutta, derived from the Hindu Goddess of time, doomsday, and death, is described throughout the religion as “the dark one”, sometimes referred to as “the dark mother”. This follows a similar descriptive representation of Vessel as a deity, adopting relations to time and death within themselves, forming the band to confront the constrictions of limitation and death, which seems to bleed into the running theme of the EP.
