You Could Be Happy Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You could be happy, and I won't know
But you weren't happy the day I watched you go
And all the things that I wish I had not said
Are played in loops 'til it's madness in my head
Is it too late to remind you how we were?
Not our last days of silent screamin' blur
Most of what I remember makes me sure
I should have stopped you from walking out the door

[Verse 2]
You could be happy, I hope you are
You made me happier than I'd been by far
Somehow everything I own smells of you
And for the tiniest moment it's all not true
Do the things that you always wanted to
Without me there to hold you back, don't think, just do
More than anything I want to see you, girl
Take a glorious bite out of the whole world

What did Snow Patrol say about "You Could Be Happy"?
Genius Answer

According to Gary Lightbody in 2013:

It’s one of my favorite moments. It’s a very simple song, one of my favorite moments on Eyes Open, our biggest record. […] This is kind of the quietest moment on there; you could make an argument for “The Finish Line” being the quietest moment, but this is certainly a very tender, delicate, almost paper-thin moment that is like a music box playing. That’s the sound that we were trying to go for.

In fact, we actually tasked a guy that builds music boxes to build a music box that would play the song so that on tour we could not only have the song played on the music box for the recording – like, whatever the song lasts, three-and-a-half minutes of the song, three-and-a-half minutes the music box would play that – but we could actually use it live. Just put a microphone on it and it would be like a beautiful piece of machinery that actually controls and conducts the song.

But the cost of the music box to be made was the same price as what we were paying to make the album, so it became prohibitive to actually do it! It’s a shame, it was a good idea. So unfortunately after all that story and all the magical elements of having that being a living, breathing organism, we had to fake it by playing xylophones and glockenspiels and various different plinky instruments, the thumb pianos and things like that to create that music box sound.

But there’s still part of me that, when I hear it, I hear the intention. I hear the music box. So there’s a kind of romantic imagery in that song for me, like the little ballerina turning. My aunt used to have a music box with that ballerina on pointe, turning around when I played the little plinky song. So that sort of conjures that in my head. It’s funny how a song that has nothing to do with something conjures that particular thing every time.
