“Life by the Sea” is about the stress that comes with being an online content creator/streamer and pressures of streaming. In CG5’s behind the scenes video of the song, Tubbo states he takes inspiration from many of the songs in his “Chill Songs 2” playlist, most notably NVTHVN’s song, “Dance in the Living Room,” and love-sadKID’s song, “Cash.”
Tubbo and CG5 previously collaborated in “Into the Thick of It!” with Tubbo as a featured artist, making this song their second collaboration. It is also Tubbo’s debut single, which took six months for him to complete (as stated in the music video’s description):

When I wrote this song, this was probably the peak of me being really stressed by the numbers. And I used this as a form of escapism. You might think you have to accelerate all the time, but realistically, slowing down can make your content miles better. […] It was so healthy to always have the mindset of, “I’m gonna do better than that!” because you might never, but that doesn’t matter. It’s about having the mindset and the positivity. […] It’s so important to be in a good place mentally in order to create the things you love and enjoy creating with the things you love.
Tubbo via I Spent A Day With…
On December 21, 2021, Tubbo released a merchandise line, By The Sea, named after “Life by the Sea”.
He first teased the merchandise line via his alternate Twitter account on December 13. Hours before the line dropped, he released two more teasers on Twitter, one with the song name written in the tweet and one counting down the minutes before the drop. The latter two teasers featured gaming YouTuber and Twitch streamer billzo.
