Shy Away (Livestream Version) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When you get home
You better not be there
We're placin' bets you won't

[Pre-Chorus]
Shed your modesty
And the only thing to leave behind
Is your own skin on the floor

[Chorus]
Don't you shy away (Ah-ah-ah)
Manifest a ceiling
When you shy away (Ah-ah-ah)
Searchin' for that feelin'
Just like an "I love you" (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
That isn't words (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote that's never heard (Ah-ah-ah)
Don't you sh-

[Verse 2]
When you get home
You barely recognize the pictures
They put in a frame

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause you shed your modеsty
Don't circle the track
Take what you havе
And leave your skin on the floor
[Chorus]
Don't you shy away (Ah-ah-ah)
Manifest a ceiling
When you shy away (Ah-ah-ah)
Searchin' for that feelin'
Just like an "I love you" (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
That isn't words (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote (Ah-ah-ah)
That's never heard

[Verse 3]
When I get home
Boy, you better not be there
You're long gone

[Pre-Chorus]
Shed your modesty
Don't circle the track
Just break the cycle in half
And leave your skin on the floor

[Chorus]
Don't you shy away
Shy away (Ah-ah-ah)
Searchin' for that feelin'
Just like an "I love you" (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
That isn't words (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote (Ah-ah-ah)
That's never heard
That's never heard (Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah)
[Outro]
An "I love you"
That isn't words
Like a song he wrote
That's never heard
Don't you shy away

About

Genius Annotation

The live debut performance of “Shy Away” is the first to have been officially shared following the Livestream Experience, and was also remastered and released as a single with an accompanying video. The video was re-cut from the livestream and received a new color grade. The same was done with “Heathens / Trees” before the surprise release of Scaled And Icy (Livestream Version), which features remastered versions of all the performed songs.

The Livestream Experience also marks the first performance where Joseph screams “shy away” during the last chorus. He has since chosen to keep it in his live performances of the song, keeping it for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards (May 23) (video) the season 8, episode 162 (May 28, 2021) of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (video) and the Takeover Tour. With the first two performances being held within a week of Scaled And Icy’s release, the television broadcasting and Internet sharing of the performances both helped promote the album.

Why is the set for "Shy Away" so different?
Genius Answer

While most of the live performances from the Livestream Experience re-used the same couple sets, changing only the lighting and decorations between songs, “Shy Away” is one of three songs that got its own set. (The others are the first performance of “Choker” and the living room set for “Saturday”) While not much is yet known about the radically different set from the others in the Livestream Experience, its exclusive existence may simply be due to “the unleashing of an imagination.” The leading theory is the icy location is a small nod to Scaled And Icy’s album title.

The idea of imagination paired with the snowy location may be a reference to The Chronicles of Narnia, a fantasy book series in which the concepts of imagination and disbelief run heavily throughout. The author, C.S. Lewis, wrote about his interpretation of imagination in his essay “Image and Imagination”:

For me, reason is the natural organ of truth; but imagination is the organ of meaning. Imagination, producing new metaphors or revivifying old, is not the cause of truth, but its condition.

While this theory of Tyler Joseph expressing himself in C.S. Lewis' way has not been confirmed, the possible connection is too heavy to dismiss, especially given the two’s Christian history and similar stances on creativity.
