Tyler maintains a humble, submissive tone towards God, but seems to change who he sings to for the third verse. There, he tells a story with a handful of interesting metaphors which have inspired fans to develop numerous theories of their meaning.

What is the last verse about?
Genius Answer

Tyler Joseph never fully discloses the meaning of the third verse, but he has said it is one of the most favorite verses he has ever written.

The actual meaning varies by interpretation, but given Tyler’s known Christian background and the Christian undertones all over the self-titled album, the verse is likely about Salvation. Tyler describes himself as having been in a hearse, but now the hearse is no longer able to take him to his inevitable death because it ran out of gas (this is likely alluding to how we are no longer uncontrollably damned because Jesus died for us on the cross). Now, Tyler is in his coffin in the Taxicab heading towards death. Tyler can’t escape the coffin on his own, but God can pick the lock for him to save him from Hell. This happens near the end of the song where Tyler asks the three men (referencing the holy trinity) what is going on, and they say they are driving towards the sun (heaven) where he is forgiven.

Hope this helped!

Who are the three men in the taxi cab?
Genius Answer

While we cannot know for certain, the most probable theory postulates that these three people are God, or the Holy Trinity. As the Old Testament states, God is three persons in one, which is generally referred to as the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All are separate, and all are the same.

What is this song about?
Genius Answer

Like many twenty one pilot’s songs, the song can be interpreted many ways. Two of the main interpretations are that it is about Tyler Joseph’s struggle with his faith and his depression. The three men are thought to be God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in this interpretation. The other interpretation is that this song is about a suicide attempt from Tyler’s perspective and the three men are ER’s.
