Tiny Dancer Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band
Pretty-eyed, a pirate smile
You'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her
Dancin' in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me
Tiny dancer in my hand

[Pre-Chorus]
But, oh, how it feels so real
Lyin' here with no one near

And only you, and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly

[Chorus]
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You've had a busy day today
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You've had a busy day today
[Verse 2]
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handin' tickets out for God
Turnin' back, she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man, he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Lookin' on, she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, how it feels so real
Lyin' here with no one near
And only you, and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly

[Chorus]
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Genius Annotation

Tiny Dancer

Following Elton’s classic Crocodile Rock performance at the Troubadour, Bernie and Elton are invited to Mama Cass’s (of the Mama and the Papas) house in the hills above LA. It is here that Elton starts to feel lost and alone amongst all the madness. He breaks into a reimagining of Tiny Dancer. ‘'We use the song as a Way of showing an introspective interlude at Elton’s evening at Mama Cass’s party; He’s reflecting and processing the fact that Bernie isn’t just his and that being grown up doesn’t mean things don’t always go your way’'
