Terry Kennedy came up with the idea of “Kick, Push, Pass” after hearing Lupe Fiasco’s 2006 hit “Kick, Push” which is described as a love story between two skateboarders.

He felt that Lupe was not a real skateboarder, and more of a poser, therefore should not have made a song related to the sport. Terry stated in the 2006 BEEF IV interview “I don’t rap, but if you gonna try eat off my plate, I'ma eat off your plate”.

Terry, along with fellow Ice Cream Team skateboarders Kevin Booker and Jacob Walder recorded the song, then travelled to Barcelona, Spain to continue filming for Ice Cream Volume 1. Upon their return, they realised the song had reached radio stations like Hot 97 and was a hit. Terry stated that over 50,000 people reached out to him showing love for the song, with one fan stating “nigga we ridin', fuck Lupe”. Terry then went on to say “I really never thought I was somebody until I made that diss record”.

In an interview later that year, Lupe Fiasco clarified; “I’m not a skater and I don’t want to keep putting on the faces of people who’ve been skating for 20 years and actually lived out "Kick, Push”.
