Starting with a melancholy atmosphere that transitions to a heavy trap song and transitioning once more into a dance song that interpolates the lyrics of Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, “Testing” showcases the diverse sounds of electronic music with the production from none other The Chainsmokers themselves and co-production from Chicago-based EDM producer Whethan. With the track’s lyrics and song structure, “Testing” heavily insinuates themes about the use of getting drunk on alcohol and/or the use of hallucinogenic drugs.

“Testing” was first teased on March 15th, 2022 when The Chainsmokers uploaded a video showcasing their album, The Chainsmokers – So Far So Good (Chapter 1). Continuing to be teased on social media, the full song was performed live at O2 Academy Brixton on April 14th, 2022, fundamentally teasing the whole song until the studio version was released on So Far So Good as the tenth track on May 13th, 2022.
