Cancer Lyrics

[Verse 1: Mike Hranica, Jeremy DePoyster, Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
How routine it feels like
Like I fell through the floor (Like I fell through the floor)
Crushed by another passing
It's all happened before

[Pre-Chorus: Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
Still, I'm not pretending
To know every story and every choice

I'm just some voice below
The background noise

[Chorus: Jeremy DePoyster, Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
I hope that it's cancer
And not something else (Else, else, else)
'Cause I don't need any more things
I don't wanna talk about
('Bout, 'bout, 'bout)

[Verse 2: Mike Hranica, Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
How could I think such a thing? Who am I to say?
Daily devastation that I can't validate
"What's wrong with you?" They'll ask about me
"You'rе done, you're through"

[Pre-Chorus: Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
Still, I'm not pretеnding
To know every story and every choice
[Chorus: Jeremy DePoyster, Mike Hranica & Jeremy DePoyster]
I hope that it's cancer (I hope that it's cancer)
And not something else (Else, else, else) (And not something else)
'Cause I don't need any more things
I don't wanna talk about
('Bout, 'bout, 'bout) (Don't wanna talk about it)
I don't need an answer (I don't need an answer)
Care about Heaven or Hell (About Heaven or Hell)
I hope that it's cancer
So
what does that say about myself? (About myself)

[Outro: Jeremy DePoyster]
I hope that it's cancer
And not something else
'Cause I don't need any more things
I don't wanna talk about

Genius Annotation

Jonathan Gering, keyboardist for TDWP wrote the lyrics for this song.
When asked about the track, Mike Hranica said that

“A hero of his [Jonathon] had passed away and his instinctual thought was, “I hope he died of an illness rather than suicide or addiction or something like that,” and coming to terms with what a deranged and bizarre thought that is. I think “Cancer” is without a doubt a song people will have to get to and listen through. I think the chorus is just brilliantly written by John and it’s a theme that is certainly more jarring and thought-provoking than maybe more run-of-the-mill material.
