Genius Annotation

The song was penned by The Fray guitarist Joe King after going through a heartbreaking moment in his life; a divorce after 12 years of marriage. He is metaphorically floating in the sea, waiting for the wind to push him back in the direction he was going.

Joe King says of the song:

I connected to the early Eastern explorers who were in the middle of the ocean not knowing where they were and not knowing if they was going to fall off the edge of the earth, or if they were going to discover new land, or if they were ever going to see their families again. That was me.
