It is interesting to me that In the Car Outside, a song about a budding affair, is sandwiched between Runaway Horses and In Another Life—two songs about missed expectations and what-ifs.

Runaway Horses seems to be about a man who left the town looking back on a girl he used to know who had big dreams but ended up staying in Nephi to live a simple life with a local man. In Another Life seems to be about that local man who the girl chose to stay with, always second-guessing whether or not she is happy that she chose him instead of chasing her youthful dreams.

In the end, all the thinking about if she wonders who she’d be if things were different seems to makes him wonder who he’d be if things were different. You get the idea that his insecurities about if she is happy stem from the fact that he doesn’t feel happy or fulfilled about his own situation and he’d been projecting his feelings onto his wife.
