THE KILLING OF GEORGIE (PT. III) Lyrics
Good morning America
What is on your mind?
We were so close to something
That we all could all get behind
We were almost shaking hands
Making progress, making plans
And we could have made a difference
But the stars were not aligned
[Chorus]
And even in our sleep
A pain that we cannot forget
Falls drop by drop upon the heart until
In our own despair
And against our will
Comes wisdom through the awful grace of God
[Verse 2]
Georgie's life ended there
But I ask who really cares?
Let the word go forth from this time and from this place
Do we hold these truths to be self-evident?
Will we ever get around it and are ever gonna face
[Chorus]
That even in our sleep
A pain that we cannot forget
Falls drop by drop upon the heart until
In our own despair
And against our will
Comes wisdom through the awful grace of God
Georgie, please stay
They took your breath away
It's not what we were hoping for and it's not what we need
I still have a dream
Rooted in the American dream
One day this nation will rise up
And it will live up to its creed
[Chorus]
And even in our sleep
A pain that we cannot forget
Falls drop by drop upon the heart until
In our own despair
And against our will
Comes wisdom through the awful grace of God
[Bridge]
They can shake down the mountains
The hills can be removed
But love and faith won't be replaced
They can shake down the mountains
The hills can be removed
But love and faith won't be replaced
[Chorus]
And even in our sleep
A pain that we cannot forget
Falls drop by drop upon the heart until
In our own despair
And against our will
Comes wisdom through the awful grace of God
In our own despair
And against our will
Comes wisdom through the awful grace of God
They can shake down the mountains
The hills can be removed
But love and faith won't be replaced
About
Likely a reference to the murder of George Floyd by the knee of then Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The song was released on day seven of the trial that would eventually find Chauvin guilty on all counts, including murder. The title and some of the lyrics are a direct reference to “The Killing of Georgie, Pts. 1 & 2” by Rod Stewart.
The original music video (which the band has removed from YouTube) and overall tone of the song have been widely panned by critics and leftists as typical mealy-mouthed performative liberalism, as the song does not have a specific call to action such as “Abolish the Police” or “End Qualified Immunity”. Some lines even seem dismissive of the murder: many feel that a reference in the chorus to “the awful grace of God,” despite invoking a classic Greek tragedy, is too passive when attempting to hold George Floyd’s murderer, Derek Chauvin, accountable for his actions.
The music video was later replaced with one in the same minimalistic art style as the rest of the album.
