Waves Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Cold blood, fever sweating pain
Your touch engraved in my brain
I want to sleep in the day
But I can’t keep myself up

Warm currents I feel in the waves
Your love consumed in my veins
Can’t even feel my own face
Pray to escape the rush

[Pre-Chorus]
And I
I just wanna ride
Ride the waves tonight
Just to feel alive

[Chorus]
I need you
It ain’t true
Because you
Say goodbye like it’s going out of style

[Verse 2]
Intoxication is free
When you forget about me
Our time is so incomplete
Why can’t we get enough
Come down, relax it’s a breeze
Chill out with good company
Until we break everything
And I’m back on the cloud above

[Pre-Chorus]
And I
I just wanna ride
Ride the waves tonight
Just to feel alive

[Chorus]
I need you
It ain’t true
Because you
Say goodbye like it’s going out of style
I need you
It ain’t true
Because you
Say goodbye like it’s going out of style

[Bridge]
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style
Going out of style

[Chorus]
I need you
It ain’t true
Because you
Say goodbye like it’s going out of style
I need you
It ain’t true
Because you
Say goodbye like it’s going out of style

Genius Annotation

Waves was one of the first songs written for Waking Up in Wonderland. We had this concept for a song about a toxic relationship, but it was definitely not autobiographical. We’ve always appreciated songs with juxtaposition – a happy sounding song with depressing lyrics like Outkast’s “Hey Ya“, Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks“, or Third-Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life“. So we set out to write a fun summer jam with a deeper meaning behind it.

Together we decided it would be interesting to imagine a couple who were madly in love but not at all good for each other and they go to a hotel room and completely destroy it, like their love is destroying themselves. The title Waves references both the up-and-down nature of the relationship and also the up-and-down melody in the chorus.
