Hallelujah Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

[Verse 2]
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

[Verse 3]
Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya'
And I've seen your flag on the Marble Arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

[Verse 4]
Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya'
It was not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who has seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

[Outro]
(Instrumental)

Genius Annotation

The song Hallelujah is know to have over 300 public covers, remixes, and interpolations, but the classic was originally performed by deceased singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen (1934-2016), in which he wrote over 80 different verses for the song.

(As quoted form Leonard Cohen’s page)
The song wasn’t all that popular when it first came out. However, it was covered by John Cale, in 1991, for a tribute album. He used the modified lyrics, based on Cohen’s 1988 live version. Jeff Buckley heard Cale’s version and did his own cover on his 1994 album Grace. Buckley’s version went on to become the most well-known recording of the song.

This cover by YouTube guitarist Eric “TheDooo” was performed after a extremely high number of requests of a full cover were received after Eric performed the first Verse and Chorus of the song in his video “Playing BEAUTIFUL Song Requests – Reading PSN Messages Ep. 4”, released November 27, 2018 in which he performed song requests from fans on his Playstation 4. Just under two months later, Eric released his full version of the cover.
