No Cops Lyrics

Hello balcony and folks on the floor
Hello to the sound man, hello to the door
Man smoking out on the street
He can't comprehend the screaming

We've locked all the doors, and please understand
We've nailed down the latch, so meet our demands
In the time that we permit, or else the band will get it

We are here to steal your dreams
Just listen and comply
No cops, no cops, no cops, no cops
Just They Might Be Giants
No cops, no cops, no cops, no cops
Just They Might Be Giants

Genius Annotation

Week 3 of They Might Be Giants' 2015 Dial-A-Song project, “No Cops” is sung by Brooklyn-based musician and friend of the band Corn Mo. In the music video’s YouTube description the band says, “This is a song created as an introduction to our new live show.”

The lyrics are the words of a hostage-taker announcing that he has taken control of a performance venue. His only demands seem to be that They Might Be Giants perform, and that “no cops” are called.

The music video depicts Corn Mo with his face theatrically painted white with two black birds over his eyes, interspersed with text composed of letters cut from magazines in classic “ransom note” style. It reads:

  • Ok, no more talk
  • This will be our only communication
  • Do not go to the media or the authorities
  • Here we go again
  • We hear those trumpets blow again

As the video ends, Corn Mo holds up a final scrap of ransom note: “No cops.”
