Flame Lyrics

[Intro]
Ooh, ooh

[Verse 1]
Cold in the night when I hold you close
Searching your eyes, but you're gone like a ghost

[Pre-Chorus]
And I said "baby, you can put it on me"
'Cause I know I don't make it easy
My body hurts with every heart beat
Just say I'm not the only one

[Chorus]
C'mon, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And tell me that you still want to stay, don't leave
Even though I never give you nothing but hurt
Even though the better part of me, it don't work
Baby, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And we can let it burn
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

[Verse 2]
I'll pay any price for the wrongs I've done
It's all you can do when you love someone, oh
[Pre-Chorus]
And I said "Baby, you can put it on me"
'Cause I know I don't make it easy
My body hurts with every heart beat
Just say I'm not the only one

[Chorus]
C'mon, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And tell me that you still want to stay, don't leave
Even though I never give you nothing but hurt
Even though the better part of me, it don't work
Baby, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And we can let it burn
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

[Bridge]
And I know and I know I can't make you
I can't make you let go (Don't let go)
And I don't and I don't and I don't blame you
'Cause I hurt you before
Tell me

[Chorus]
C'mon, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And tell me that you still want to stay, don't leave
Even though I never give you nothing but hurt
Even though the better part of me, it don't work
Baby, tell me that you've still got the flame for me
And we can let it burn
[Outro]
Ooh, ooh
And let it burn
Let it burn, let it burn
Ohh yeah, baby

About

Genius Annotation

“Flame” is a promo single by singer-songwriter Tinashe. The song was first announced in 2015, during a listening party for her upcoming album Joyride.

After the commercial failure of the album’s initial urban/pop lead singles “Player” and “Superlove” RCA took control of the project and insisted Tinashe release a far more pop/commercial as a single.

Two promo dance radio mixes were released in the weeks follow but this track also failed to chart well however, and eventually the singer re-recorded most of the album, making the official lead single “No Drama”.

All three promo singles were included on the Japanese Edition of the final album.

What did Tinashe say about "Flame"?
Genius Answer

Tinashe posted the following on her Instagram story prior to the release of Flame:

“Have you ever felt like you were watching ‘the one’ slip away? Like you were slowly watching a match that could have become a blazing fire burn out? Like if you could do it all over again you would do whatever it took not to f*ck it all up? You can’t make someone fall in love with you. No matter how hard you try, you can’t make someone feel the way you imagine they could in your head. But maybe it was all in your head to begin with? Sometimes "love” really is too good to be true…“ – Tinashe via Instagram story on 13/3/2017

Why was "Flame" released as the 'official lead single'?
Genius Answer

People think that some of the stuff I put out was forced upon me,“ she says. "It wasn’t…with the exception of ‘Flame,’

That song, released in March 2017, was a synth-heavy, eighties-inspired departure from her usual R&B hits. She ultimately considered the release a compromise.

I cried for two days when they told me I had to put that song out as a single. Dead-ass serious. They forced that 100 percent. Okay y'all, I’ll do what you want to do, but you have to work with me as well. And when that didn’t work, it was kind of like, All right, now it’s time to get with my plan.
