Show Up Choose Love Lyrics

[Intro: TobyMac]
Yeah, yeah
Shoo!
Whatcha got, Mr. Reddick?

[Verse 1: Jon Reddick, TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real]
We've come a long way
Been through some dark days
We seen some things change
And we shall overcome
It's been a long night (Long night)
We need some mornin' light (Mornin' light)
To get to the other side (Other side)
We got to keep on findin' ways to…

[Chorus: TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Show up
And we got to…
Choose love
We've come a long way
We got a long way to go
(Yeah)
Let's do the next right thing and…
Show up
We've got to…
Choose love
We've come a long way
We got a long way to go
Let's do the next right thing
[Verse 2: TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Huh, now you can see it ain't my fault (But should it be?)
Or you can say it's all on y'all (But should it be?)
Or you can say whatever you want (But should it be?)
Man, they probably gonna cancel me (Old school)
This nation that we all love
Is partly covered in rust
We got no time for this fuss
We got to keep on findin' ways to…

[Chorus: TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Show up
And we got to…
Choose love
We've come a long way
We got a long way to go
(Yeah)
Let's do the next right thing and…
Show up
We've got to…
Choose love
We've come a long way
We got a long way to go
Let's do the next right thing

[Post-Chorus: TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Show up
Choose love

We've come a long way
We got a long way to go
Let's do the next right thing
[Bridge: Jon Reddick, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real]
(You know, we should leave everyone one we see better than we found 'em)
Oh, better than we found 'em
Better than we found 'em
Better
Let's love people well
Oh, better (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better, oh, better (Ooh)
Let's love people well
His love never fails (Ooh-ooh)
Better (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better, oh, better (Ooh)
Let's love people well
His love never fails (Ooh-ooh)
Better (Better) (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better (Better) (Ooh)
Better than we found 'em
Better, oh, better (Ooh)
We've got to keep on findin' ways to…
[Chorus: TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Show up
Yeah, we got to…
Choose love
Ayy, we've come a long way
We got a long way to go
Let's do the next right thing and…
Show up
Ayy, we got to…
Choose love
I know we've come a long way
We got a long way to go
Let's do the next right thing

[Outro: Jon Reddick, TobyMac, Jon Reddick, Janice Gaines, Blessing Offor & Gabe Real, All]
Show up, show up
Show up, show up
Choose love, choose love
Choose love, choose love
Sometimes, the next right thing is all you can do (All you can do)
Show up, show up (Oh, oh)
Choose love, choose love (Oh)
Sometimes, the next right thing is all you can do (Yeah-eah) (Yeah)

About

Genius Annotation

In the third and final promotional single for Life After Death, TobyMac covers a subject that has been a top priority his entire music career: racial unity. Despite living after the Civil Rights Movement, McKeehan knows the fight is not over and consistently promotes racial reconciliation and unity in numerous songs, engagements and other interactions. For “Show Up Choose Love,” he collaborated with Jon Reddick, a Black worship pastor from Memphis, TN, to share their first step in racial reconciliation.

On the auditory side, “Show Up Choose Love” is a contemporary pop song that borrows many jazz and Gospel music elements, both genres of which have deep Black roots. With the former, a light piano and funky drum set drive the song; with the latter, a choir elevates it while pushing the theme of community. On the message side, the song blankets many large and small actions that can impact race relations—from sweeping political movements to the tiny day-to-day, one-on-one interactions. For McKeehan and Reddick, the first step is to show up in each others' lives and choose to love as an authentic community on a personal and human level.

“Show Up Choose Love” was released as a digital single on August 5, 2022, two weeks before Life After Death.

Genius Answer

In promoting the then-upcoming release of Life After Death, TobyMac revealed some of the album’s featured artists. On August 2, McKeehan shared via Instagram his collaboration with Christian worship artist John Reddick—which was set to release as the album’s final promotional single a few days later—saying:

People coming together from different races is something that’s always been important to me. I got to do a song with my worship pastor and my friend—my dear friend—Mr. John Reddick. John’s voice emotes passion like no one I’ve ever been around, and he pushed me to do the same about something that’s important to both of us. Song’s called “Show Up Choose Love.” And sometimes, it’s just that simple.

While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly which church McKeehan and his family call their home church due to his touring life, the church atmosphere he helps create on the road and general privacy reasons, McKeehan has made it public that he at least visited the church where Reddick leads worship—Church of the City in Franklin, TN. Additionally, the two of them toured together in 2021 for the HITS DEEP TOUR, due in part to Reddick being a solo artist on McKeehan’s label, Gotee Records. But anytime McKeehan talks of Reddick, it’s him first as a close personal friend of his, so close that he grieved with the McKeehans when they lost their firstborn son, Truett.

He also shared the above story-behind-the-song video on October 26, 2022.
