Litanie Contre la Peur in French means “Litany Against Fear”. Litany, in Christian worship and some forms of Judaic worship, is a form of prayer used in services and processions, and consisting of a number of petitions. The word comes through Latin litania from Ancient Greek λιτανεία (litaneía), which in turn comes from λιτή (litê), meaning “supplication”.

The name is in reference to Frank Herbert’s Dune. The Litany Against Fear is a mantra said, often by higher members of society and mental training in the series, as a way to ground themselves when they may be losing a grip due to fear and anxiety. Here it goes:

“I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
