“Tommy” is the second single released after Tommy Genesis’ first album World Vision. The song focuses strongly on empowerment, and the visuals have their own empowering story behind them. In the music video for “Tommy,” she is shown in a bathtub filled with milky water. She later said that it was very important to her that she provided this visual, as a testament to her confidence and free execution of her artistic vision.
“Tommy” is also about the pseudonym Tommy Genesis took on. She chose Tommy because she wanted her music to be as anonymous as possible. She stated in an interview, “if I had it my way you wouldn’t even know my gender.”
The Charlie Heat-produced track caught a lot of attention once Cardi B’s track “Bartier Cardi” was released alongside 21 Savage, many believed that Cardi had stolen the basis of “Tommy” for her song.

“Tommy” is a song I wrote about one half of my split personality. It’s become the way I represent myself in most social situations. It’s just a rap song, but it’s also a pure representation of Tommy without Genesis (you’ll meet her later).

Me and Charlie were in the studio. It was like midnight and I was so tired that day. I was like: “I’m gonna go,” and Charlie was like: “Just wait, hold on, let’s just try to make one more song.” He started making the “Tommy” beat. It was literally two notes.
