Try to play it cool, I like you
Have me in your hand just like that
Wish I never told ya, it's killin' me to wonder
[Pre-Chorus]
You give, you give me empty promises of love
You're an honest man when you're drunk
Wish I never asked ya, but it's killin' me to wonder
How long? How long?
[Chorus]
How, how long have you loved another
While I'm dreamin' of us together?
She got the best of you
Part of me always knew
How, how long have you tried to end it
While I'm blamin' myself to fix it?
How long? (How long?)
How long?
[Verse 2]
Listen to my fears, not my friends
They don't tell the truth, they like you
Wish I never told ya, it's killin' me to wonder (Ah, yeah)
You give, you give me empty promises of love
You're an honest man when you're drunk
Wish I never asked ya (Asked ya), but it's killin' me to wonder (Ah, yeah)
How long? How long?
[Chorus]
How, how long have you loved another
While I'm dreamin' of us together?
She got the best of you
Part of me always knew
How, how long have you tried to end it
While I'm blamin' myself to fix it?
How long? (How long?)
I need to know
How long have you loved another
While I'm dreamin' of us together?
How long? (How long?)
How long? How long?
[Bridge]
I know love isn't fair
I know the heart wants what it wants
There's no way to prepare
For burning, brutal rejection
I know it takes some time
To feel the pain of losin' a lie
How, how long have you loved another
While I'm dreamin' of us together?
She got the best of you (She did)
Part of me always knew (I knew)
How, how long have you tried to end it
While I'm blamin' myself to fix it?
How long? (Hey, yeah, how long?)
I need to know
How long have you loved another
While I'm dreamin' of us together?
How long? (How long?, yeah)
How long? How long?
About
Known for her references to heartbreak, breakup, drugs and sex in her music, Tove Lo makes a perfect fit for a show like Euphoria. Prior to its inclusion on Dirt Femme, “How Long” was released as part of the soundtrack to the second season of the HBO original series.
The song is briefly featured in a scene during episode four, “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can” and it borrows inspiration from the storyline of characters Maddy and Nate, and the latter’s infidelity. According to Lo, it’s about “love, betrayal and denial.”
In 2019, Tove Lo foreshadowed her appearance in the Euphoria universe during a “Would You Rather?” game with The FADER. When asked if she would prefer to create a TV show for her character Sunshine Kitty or write a soundtrack song, her choice was the latter:
I think I would do music to the [soundtrack], ‘cause making music is my favorite thing. […] I think something in the world of Euphoria mixed with Superbad."
The Swedish singer announced the release of “How Long” on January 24, a few days after teasing the title of the track on TikTok and Instagram while on the set of its music video, which premiered on February 10.

“How Long” is about love, betrayal and denial. It was one of the few songs that came together for me during quarantine, and I think it’s so beautiful in all its darkness. I’m so honored that it gets to be a part of Euphoria, a show I love so much because of its rawness and provocative storytelling.
