Yahweh Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Take these shoes
Click clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fit

[Verse 2]
Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, clean

[Verse 3]
Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it sing, sing

[Chorus]
Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I'm waiting for the dawn

[Verse 4]
Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don't make a fist, no
[Verse 5]
Take this mouth
So quick to criticize

Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

[Chorus]
Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I'm waiting for the dawn

[Bridge]
Still waiting for the dawn
The sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
Oh

[Chorus]
Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?
[Post-Chorus]
Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh

[Verse 6]
Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will

[Verse 7]
What no man can own
No man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And make it break

Genius Annotation

The eleventh track on U2’s eleventh studio album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” was recorded largely in one take. It was produced by Chris Thomas and written by U2.
This rock genre song is a almost like a musical prayer only complemented by the chorus’s enthralling sound (given by mainly Bono but also of course the band’s upbeat pickup) of an emotional cry towards “Yahweh”.
When talking about ideas for the song’s theme Bono remarked, “I had this idea that no one can own Jerusalem, but everybody wants to put flags on it.” he explained, “The title’s an ancient name that’s not meant to be spoken. I got around it by singing. I hope I don’t offend anyone.” Yahweh is the name of God in The Bible.
